La Nina Declared for Winter 2020

A La Nina is the most likely outcome for 2020. NOAA have stated that there is a 55% chance La Nina will develop for 2020. This means colder than average waters are expected to develop over the central Equatorial regions during the remainder of 2020.

What impacts could this have?

The following map from Columbia University shows the impact of a La Nina on the U.S. Winter pressure pattern. It is evident that this pattern can increase the presence of cold air towards the North West Plains, producing a frigid winter. The effects of La Nina are usually less well-defined further south east, however it can produce snowier conditions in the Mid West with “increased” precipitation. It is too early to give any definite indications on how the Winter of 2020 will shape up.

Our official WINTER FORECAST for 2020 will be released in November 2020.
