Weather-Warning issued for UK: Risk of flooding tomorrow from rainfall

Good afternoon. So far September has been fairly quiet weather-wise, however that’s about to change. Wind wont be the issue, but rainfall. Starting this evening tonight, some fairly heavy pulses of rainfall are expected across England and Wales, but nothing major. It isn’t until the early hours, and through much of tomorrow, when things start becoming lively.

Heavy, potentially thundery downpours, are expected to develop across Southern parts of Wales, South West England and the south west Midlands during the rush hour tomorrow morning. These downpours, some quite long lasting, will transfer slowly eastwards later on in the morning, affecting many parts of the Midlands, southern England and later in the afternoon eastern parts. These downpours will be pretty intense, perhaps dropping 3 inches of rainfall within 3 hours in a few areas. Not everywhere will see these very high amounts, however most of us will get a real soaking.

The map below gives a brief idea over which areas are likely to be worst impacted. As you can see, it’s mostly the Midlands (especially the south and east Midlands), as well as parts of South East England, ie Greater London area. Here up to 75mm could fall within 3 hours, leading to a real risk of surface water and river flooding. In a larger area (yellow), there is also a risk, and some areas could see around 25mm within 2 to 3 hours, which also produces a risk of surface water flooding in places.

Keep up to date with relevant warnings issued from the Met Office and also our own information for further updates. Bear this information in mind when travelling tomorrow, and take extra care on the roads and allow extra journey time to allow for the risk of travel disruption.
