Heavy snowfall hits New York City

It’s currently snowing heavily in New York City! Around 2cm has accumulated so far, not enough to produce any travel issues as of yet.

The latest precipitation radar, courtesy of NOAA (below), shows that a rather heavy band of snow is currently affecting the NYC Metro region. This is currently producing snowfall rates of between 1 and 2 inches per hour.

It’s not heavy enough to produce any significant travel disruption, however it is starting to settle on the roads within the city center. A decent webcam stream is available here. The image below from @GinMillPhil on twitter, shows that the snow in Manhattan is pretty heavy right now.

Further snowfall is likely in the next few hours, although at times some lighter interludes are possible. Between 2 and 4 inches is likely to accumulate in and around the city, however these figures increase north west within New York State. Around 12″ could accumulate on the northern side (upstate) of New York State and surrounding areas, into New Hampshire, Vermont and Northern Maine. The following map gives an overview of how much snowfall is expected:

Do take extra care whilst traveling today.
