Extremely dangerous conditions are expected in the coming days. Weather conditions are expected to deteriorate with both strong winds and extremely high temperatures working to increase the risk of bushfires. In particular, a State of Disaster has been issued for Victoria by the government. This is in force for East Gippsland Shire, Mansfield Shire, Wellington Shire, Wangaratta Rural Shire, Towong Shire, Alpine Shire, Mount Butler, Mount Hotham and Mount Stirling Alpine Resorts (info via Victorian Storm Chasers). At least 17 people are currently missing following recent bushfires in Victoria.
The state of disaster is likely to result in a change in the law in the affected areas. This gives authorities the power to occupy any private property for the purpose of safety, and to enforce evacuations. In the past few days many areas, including for example East Gippsland, have experienced catastrophic bushfires. These measures are in place to protect the communities. More information on the state of disaster can be found on the government website here.
This following map from “Vic emergency” shows the current location of warnings associated with bushfires. It’s clear that a very expansive area is being affected by these fires. As a result, many evacuation routes have been affected, this has lead to many offshore / boat evacuations taking place.
The following map from “Meteociel” shows the temperature anomaly expected on Saturday. Notice the reds over the South Eastern part of Australia, indicative of much higher than normal temperatures. This, coupled with strong winds, is expected to enhance bushfire activity. Please pay very close attention to authorities and provided information and take extra care if you are near the affected areas.
