Some people are describing it as the “worst snow storm they’ve ever experienced” and some are trapped from exiting their homes due to large snow drifts, such as the one below.

The severe, well extreme, weather conditions were well forecast, however caught many out. The following pressure chart courtesy of Meteociel.fr shows an intense and deep area of low pressure around Newfoundland. Winds are gusting to well over 90mph in places! This is of course resulting in some serious drifting of snow, likely cutting off many rural communities.
The North East isn’t the only place experiencing bad winter weather. A widespread blizzard warning has been issued for parts of North and South Dakota, western Minnesota and north west Iowa. Further snowfall expected:
Some very difficult travel conditions are expected across much of the Great Lakes and North East in the next 48 hours. Please pay close attention to warnings and advisories issued by the National Weather Service.
