UK Snow-Travel Update: Parts of the M62 affected

An area of rain, sleet and snow is currently affecting the Midlands and Northern England. To lower levels, it’s primarily rain with some sleet mixed in. However, on higher ground it is falling as snow. It’s currently snowing quite heavily on the M62 Motorway (on the highest parts) between Manchester and Leeds.

The image below from highways shows the settling snow on the high road (M62) near Huddersfield.

It’s also beginning to fall in higher parts of Derbyshire, especially around the Cat and Fiddle (A537) and Leek Road (A53) areas. On these high level areas, a few centimeters of snow is possible due to their high elevation overnight. Whilst low areas may see a little slushy accumulations, temperatures will largely be too high below 250 metres to permit much snow accumulation. The area of precipitation that is producing the wintry mix right now will continue to head east. This will allow for a clearance across central towards midnight, however more wintry showers are likely overnight across Northern Hills.

This risk map gives a brief indication as to where the highest risk areas are. Be aware, this map is not designed to give you a definite forecast. It is designed, however, to quantify which areas are most likely to see snowfall (i.e. a risk map).

The wintry showers may produce significant accumulations on high grounds, i.e. the Peak District, overnight. Locally, up to 10cm could fall above 300 metres in these select areas. So be aware if your Sunday morning travels involve these areas. Otherwise, not an awful lot of wintry weather around. Yes, parts of Northern Scotland (on high ground) are likely to see continued snow showers, but for most of England and Wales, it will just be a wet and chilly night. Quite windy to, with gale force gusts around coastal areas.
