UK Weather Warning – Flooding possible on run up to Xmas

Further heavy rain is expected in the coming few days, which is not good news for those travelling prior to Christmas. In fact, the Met Office have a rainfall warning for Southern England in force up until Sunday. Up to 75mm, 3 inches, of rain is possible across some southern counties of England. That is enough to produce some isolated flooding.

The following chart shows how much rainfall is expected in different parts of the Country between now and Saturday (21st). Most areas are set to see at least an inch (indicated by the dark greens). However, some parts of Southern England, South Wales and Southern Ireland are forecast to see up to 3 inches of rainfall, locally. These higher totals are indicated by the yellows and oranges.

Also notice the fairly high totals across the Lake District, and into Southern / Central Scotland. This rainfall is “orographic”, meaning the highest totals will be mostly across high ground. Like the South, totals of 2-3″ are possible here. That is enough to produce some localized flooding issues from high river levels. As a result of the expected high rainfall totals, as discussed, the Met Office have issued weather-warnings for this week, largely for the southern part of the country.

Met Office Weather-Warning for Friday (below). Access the Met Office site here.

These warnings span South Wales, the South Midlands and much of Southern England during today, tomorrow and Friday.Warnings are also active for the weekend across Southern England. There is also a warning active in eastern Scotland for heavy rain, with up to 75mm possible in places. Be aware that there’s a risk of standing water and high river levels in the warning areas throughout this weekend. This could produce some travel disruption, unfortunately, during the busy Xmas shopping weekend.

This isn’t particularly good news, as many who are doing last minute Christmas shopping may be affected by travel disruption. It’s also a busy travel period in general, so stay tuned for further updates and warning information.
