Tough lockdown measures were introduced in Leicester following a flare up in Covid19 related deaths and cases in the past few weeks. People are currently unable to head into or out of the city for unessential reasons. This map shows the current location of the locked-down zone:

New Data from Public Health England (PHE) shows that other cities and urban areas in the UK also have significantly high infection rates. Barnsley, Bradford and Rochdale currently have infection rates above 45 in 100,000 people, therefore within the “top” group for infection rates in the UK, along with Leicester.
Additionally, other parts of Greater Manchester, including Tameside, Oldham, have been placed in the next highest infection rate category (30 to 45 cases per 100,000 people). Bedford, Rotherham, Blackburn and Kirkless also fall into this category.
It remains unclear whether these areas will go into local lockdowns in the near future. However, the situation in terms of infection rates is being closely monitored. Neil Ferguson, professor at ICL, noted that local flare ups were “inevitable” and that these areas are a continued “cause for concern”.
