Met Éireann, the Irish Meteorological Service, have named an usually deep area of low pressure off the west coast of Ireland storm “Ellen”. This is expected to affect western parts of Britain over the next few days with unusually strong winds & heavy rain.
An orange warning has been issued for central and southern Ireland for tonight, the Irish Met Service says “Storm Ellen will track over Ireland this evening and tonight bringing severe and damaging winds. Heavy rainfall and storm surge will result in some flooding.”
The windy conditions look to remain in place across much of the UK through Thursday and into Friday. During this period, wind gusts of 60 or even 70mph are possible across western coasts and hills, especially SW England, Wales, Ireland, Western Scotland. Even inland across England and Wales, gusts up to 50mph are possible late on Thursday and into Friday. Some very significant rainfall is possible to, perhaps up to 50mm locally increasing the risk of some flooding during this period. The UK Met Office have also issued several weather warnings for strong winds during this period, these at the yellow “be aware” level.
