Most of us will see a few spots of rain early on Friday in the north and later in the afternoon further south thanks to a weak cold front, however it wont bring much in the way of rain. Temperatures will then plummet drastically with some areas becoming around 10 degrees colder than they are right now by Friday evening. With it comes a widespread ground frost early on Saturday with temperatures for most areas dipping close to freezing. Then come the wintry showers around coast. To low levels these will mostly be of rain and hail, maybe the “odd flake”, however to higher areas above 350m there is the risk of some snowfall. A significant risk of perhaps disruptive snowfall for Northern Scotland with the “snow line” being lower here, down to 250m in altitude.
For all it will be a very cold weekend with a notable wind chill. Maximum temperatures will range typically from 2 to 4C in the North up to 8 or 9 in the south, but it will feel close to freezing given the strength of the northerly wind.
As mentioned, the vast majority of us wont see any snow, perhaps the “odd flake” if you catch a wintry shower around coastal counties, the Pennines and Scottish Highlands will pick up at least a dusting, and the hills of Northern Ireland. One thing to note is also the large amount of winter sunshine away from the north and east / west coasts, so if you wrap up warm and brace the cold for most in land parts of England like the Midlands, you should escape with a decent sort of weekend however.
There is definitely a risk of accumulating snow on the Scottish highlands. Places like Braemar and potentially Aviemore could see some slight snow cover. For the vast majority of us it just will be a cold weekend, unusually so. Widespread overnight frosts, and a strong wind chill however.
