Forecast Summary

Ok so some clarity…. as there has been a LOT of confusion about this weekend’s snow risk. We have been talking about snow above 200m in Northern Scotland and Northern Ireland for days, if not weeks now and finally we are here and the met office have issued their yellow warning (not for yellow snow). Indeed upland areas above say 200m could see significant snowfall tonight in both Northern Ireland and Central and Northern Scotland, not just to the Cairngorms but more “lowland” towns like Braemar, Aviemore etc will be impacted by some snow, and 5-10cm could fall above 300m.

Very Weather UK Snow Risk Map for tonight & tomorrow

Although the significant snowfall will by en large be restricted to Northern Scotland above 150-200m and above 250m or so in Northern Ireland, it’s possible that the higher parts of the North York Moors and Snowdonia could see some snow cover by Saturday morning.

Further south across England and Wales there will be some wintry showers around coasts, but the snowfall will be restircted to 300m+, parts of the North York Moors, Snowdonia could wake up to a covering of snow early on Saturday. For most in land areas and in the south, it will just be a largely DRY night with a widespread FROST so there could be some ICE to start Saturday but it will be a mostly dry day in land. Again a few showers around Northern Ireland and Northern Scotland, but as the day progresses any snow that does fall between 100 and 300m will largely melt however will remain above 300m. There will be some more persistent rain and sleet affecting eastern England on Saturday and yes there could be the “odd flake” mixed in but for most it will be cold rain. Dry elsewhere. Another few nights of frost on both Saturday, Sunday and Monday night. In fact Monday night could be particularly cold with temperatures as low as -4C!
