It’s not often that the met office issue weather warnings in Summer for 4 consecutive days, from Monday to Thursday, so you know something significant is afoot.
The weather warnings are all for heavy rain, with the risk of flooding. Thankfully the warnings are only yellow – the met office’s “be aware” severity in their 3 tier system, consisting of yellow (be aware), amber (be prepared) and red (take action). Nonetheless, some pretty poor weather is expected.
There are two separate warnings – one spanning Monday and Tuesday, and one spanning over Wednesday and Thursday. The first warning for Monday and Tuesday covers Eastern England, from North Kent, Greater London, East Anglia, the East Midlands and Lincolnshire.
The Met states that “There is a chance that heavy prolonged rainfall could lead to local flooding and disruption to transport.”. Notice they do use the word “chance” – indicating that there is some uncertainty here. Nevertheless, I think it’s pretty safe to say the BBQ wont come out here on Monday and Tuesday.
Met Office weather warning for Monday and Tuesday:
The next weather warning spans Wednesday and Thursday, spanning much of North East England, Yorkshire, Lincolnshire. The Met use the same description for this warning, indicating that there’s a chance of disruption and localized flooding.
Some weather models are indicating the chance of 2 to 3 inches of rainfall across much of Northern England during the period of Wednesday and Thursday, so the flood risk may not be limited to the warning areas. Parts of the Pennine chain, West Yorkshire and nearby areas may also see the high rainfall totals.
Again, there is some uncertainty and the areas that are currently predicted to get the most rain may change in the coming days, so keep an eye on the forecast – there’s scope for the met office warnings to be adjusted.
Met Office weather warning for Wednesday and Thursday:
There’s very little warmth and prolonged sunshine in the forecast for the coming week, which probably wont be surprising. There will be some pockets of nice weather but they’ll be fairly isolated and short lived. In the meantime, if you live in the areas mentioned in the weather warnings, keep a close eye on forecasts. Although the flooding will be localized, it could have some notable impacts.
