“Major Incident” declared in Yorkshire after Heavy Snow immobilizes vehicles

Heavy Snow has recently affected northern parts of the UK with North and West Yorkshire being particularly hard hit. Much of Leeds, Bradford and Sheffield have had 4-6 inches of snow causing trecherous conditions on the roads. The following map shows where the current snow risk is in the UK.

A major incident has now been declared in these areas due to the strain placed on emergency services as roads become increasingly impassible. Strategic Commander Mark Millins said: ‘Due to the very snowy conditions across West, South and North Yorkshire, driving conditions are very difficult and many roads are gridlocked so this is having a severe impact on our operations.’

The travel situation remains dire with most roads impassible and dozens of serious incidents on the roads, for example on the M62 motorway. Further pulses of light to moderate snowfall are expected in the next few hours before the system eventually pulls away. There is a risk of more snow though on Saturday in the area with early warnings already being issued for the region.
